TROPICO is a nonprofit Non Governmental Organization. It was created in 1986 under the name of Centro de Datos para la Conservación – CDC – Bolivia (Data for Conservation) by a group of scientists in the field of preservation sciences. After undergoing an institutional evaluation, CDC – Bolivia became TROPICO.

In more than 20 years of activity, approximately 200 projects and programs were executed in several areas within the Bolivian territory –all financed with resources from different bilateral and multilateral cooperation, foundations and international NGO´s. TROPICO has counted on the financial support of FONAMA (Environment National Fund), Secretariat PL-480, The Netherlands Cooperation, Embassy of Denmark, Embassy of Japan, PNUD, OEA (American States Organization), KFW - Germany, USAID, International Conservation, PUMA Foundation, the Inter-American Development Bank, BMZ-Germany and GEF (Global Environmental Facility), among others.TRÓPICO es una organización no gubernamental y sin fines de lucro, creada en 1986 con el nombre de Centro de Datos para la Conservación (CDC-Bolivia), por un grupo de científicos en ciencias de la conservación. CDC – Bolivia fue objeto de una evaluación institucional que (la cual) desembocó en la creación de TROPICO.

En más de 20 años de actividad, se ejecutaron alrededor de 60 proyectos y programas en varias zonas del territorio boliviano, con diferentes fuentes de financiamiento provenientes de la cooperación bilateral, multilateral, fundaciones y ONGs internacionales. Se ha contado con el apoyo financiero de FONAMA (Fondo Nacional del Medio Ambiente), la Secretaría PL-480, Cooperación Holandesa, Embajada de Dinamarca, Embajada de Japón, PNUD, OEA (Organización de Estados Americanos), KFW- Alemania, USAID, Conservación Internacional, Fundación PUMA, BID, BMZ-Alemania y GEF (Global Environmental Facility) entre otras.

Mission
To promote biodiversity conservation within the framework of sustainable development with equity and social inclusion.


Objetives

  • To support actions towards sustainable development and conservation jointly with the communities, municipalities, associations, Communal Lands of Origin (TCOs), producers associations and educational organizations of the country.
  • To render services and provide advice to public and private entities in the fields of sustainable development and conservation according to their needs and requisites.

Courses of Action

  • Biodiversity Management: Investigation and handling of species and their habitats; technological innovation and support to commercialization.
  • Strengthening Capacities: Formal and Non-formal education; development of technical and administrative capacities of local and municipal organizations; promotion of alliances.
  • Sustainable Tourism: Assessment of tourism and promotion of sustainable tourism.
  • Communication and Diffusion: Publications and audiovisuals; organizing and participating in events addressed to promote the exchange of experiences; sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.

Structure

TROPICO holds an Associates Assembly conformed by well known personalities of the environmental management and social fields that is the highest organ of decision. The Board of directors is formed by Associates chosen by the Assembly for a two-year renewable period and is the instance responsible for looking after the organization´s proper operation.
